Ribbon Cut on Green County’s Mesonet Site

Green County, Ky. – A new chapter in weather and climate monitoring begins today in Green County as officials and community members gather to celebrate the opening of the county’s first Mesonet Site. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Green County Mesonet site took place at 10 a.m. CT at 525 Temperance Road, just four miles southeast of Greensburg.

The event marks the launch of the Kentucky Mesonet’s 80th site — a major milestone for the statewide network operated by Western Kentucky University (WKU). The Mesonet provides real-time weather and environmental data for communities across Kentucky, supporting agriculture, emergency management, public safety, and scientific research.

WKU President Dr. Timothy C. Caboni and Kentucky State Climatologist Dr. Jerry Brotzge led the ceremony alongside site host Thomas Price, Mesonet Advisory Board Chair John Gordon, and other members of the Mesonet advisory board.

“This is not just about weather; it’s about resilience, preparedness, and progress for Green County and beyond,” said Dr. Brotzge. “With this new site, we’re expanding the state’s capacity to monitor and respond to changing weather conditions in real time.”

The fully automated station will record and transmit data on temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, and much more. The information collected will be available to the public, farmers, researchers, and government agencies through the Kentucky Mesonet website.
