Theodore Steven “Teddy” Winn, Jr. of Lawrenceburg, Ky., formerly of Campbellsville, Ky., was born June 24,1929 in Irvington, Ky. to Theodore Steven Winn, Sr. and Helen Elizabeth Smith Winn. Ted moved with his family to Leitchfield, Kentucky when he was 9 years old. He graduated from Leitchfield High School in 1947.
At Leitchfield High School, Ted was a basketball standout. He was known as the “Blond Bomber” and he continued his basketball talent at Georgetown College from 1947-1949. He went on to graduate from Georgetown College in 1952. While playing basketball at Georgetown, his Tigers traveled to Lexington and scrimmaged Coach Rupp’s 1948 National Championship Basketball team known as “The Fabulous Five.” Ted’s love for basketball continued with him attending over 62 KHSAA basketball tournaments.
On July 8, 1951 Ted married his high school sweetheart, Mary Alice Carrier. They moved to Campbellsville, Ky. in 1954 and began a business known as “Winn’s Store for Men” where they worked together for 37 years. Much joy came with the birth of their daughter, Julie Anne Winn, on May 5, 1961. They were blessed to celebrate 71 years of marriage together.
Ted and Mary Alice spent 57 happy years in Campbellsville. Ted was an active member of Campbellsville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. He also served as a trustee of Campbellsville University, and was an active member of Gideon’s International.
In retirement, they enjoyed spending the winter months in Seminole, Florida, and relocated their home to Lawrenceburg, Ky., in 2011, to be close to their daughter and her family. They became joyful members of Hope Community Church in Lawrenceburg, Ky.
Ted went to his heavenly home on Thursday May 2, 2024 at The Willows in Harrodsburg, Ky. at the age of 94. He is survived by his daughter Julie (Jeff) Eaton of Lawrenceburg, Ky., his grandson Andrew Eaton (Maria) of Wilmore, Ky., his granddaughter Dr. Laura Cannon of Austin, TX, his great granddaughters Charlotte and Gwendolyn Darby of Wilmore, Ky.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Helen Winn, his wife, Mary Alice Winn, his grandson-in-law, Tom Cannon, his brother Charles Winn, and his brother, Jim Winn. Ted loved the Lord, his family, and people. He never met a stranger, and was always willing to share his faith and the story of Jesus. His favorite Scripture verse was Proverbs 3:5-6, and he lived this truth daily.
